Wildlife

Anemone and orchid
There are lots of lovely wildflowers around the centre. The main seasons for the flowers are from March until mid June and again in the autumn from October through into November when Greece has its second spring. In mid summer the landscape takes on a different feel with cultivated bougainvilleas, geraniums and other plants adding colour. There are still a few brave flowers that can withstand the heat of the summer sun.
There are also many beautiful trees in the region, including citrus trees which smell lovely when in blossom in the spring and set the perfect Mediterranean scene when hanging with ripe lemons and oranges. Olive groves are particularly beautiful with many wild flowers growing underneath and ripe olives covering the trees in October and November. Figs, almonds, chestnuts and walnuts also grown in the area.

There are many animals around from shy tortoises plodding through the undergrowth to friendly geckos disguised against the walls. We also have house martins (some were recently nesting under the house), Eagles, Buzzards, Owls, Foxes and many types of lizard.

One of the many tortoises in our garden.
Even the insect life is fascinating, with bright iridescent green beetles, many butterflies, lots of serenading crickets and even the occasional praying mantis, solemnly sitting with hands together. The sea is only fished by small local boats, so there are plenty of fish to be seen. The rocks are also home to soft coral and many sea creatures including octopus and crab.
